About the Tony Sanchez Scholarship

The Tony Sanchez Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Tony Sanchez, the beloved Sports Supervisor for the City of Santa Clara Parks & Recreation Department for more than 40 years. Known throughout Northern California as “Mr. Softball,” Tony was a founding member of the Sports Association of Northern California Recreation Agencies (SANCRA) and a driving force in shaping the region’s recreation and athletics community.

Softball was Tony’s lifelong passion. He organized and led hundreds of leagues and tournaments, bringing together thousands of players, families, and fans. His leadership extended far beyond the local field—Tony managed the World Champion Santa Clara Laurels Women’s Fastpitch Team and the World Champion LeBlanc Men’s Fastpitch Team, served as President of the South Bay Sports Association of Recreation Agencies, and held the role of Youth Softball Commissioner for the Amateur Softball Association of America. He also welcomed teams from around the world, fostering connection, sportsmanship, and community.

In recognition of his unwavering dedication, the Tony Sanchez Scholarship was established to support students, professionals, and nonprofit organizations pursuing excellence in the parks and recreation field. This scholarship continues Tony’s legacy of service, mentorship, and love for recreational sports—empowering the next generation to build vibrant, active, and inclusive communities.
